A letter to the Queen
When I became a naturalised citizen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II was our Queen. In June, 2022, to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, 70 years as the Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, the entire nation celebrated with parties, dances, festivals, charity races, pudding contests and a special 4-day bank holiday weekend. Our neighbourhood threw a street party, with lots of food, games, drink, chat and a cardboard cut-out of the Queen herself. After the party, I wrote this letter on behalf of all of us in the neighbourhood. Her staff, on her behalf, responded with a lovely letter from her, thanking all of us for such kind words and actions. She died that September of 2022, but she is still very much in my mind and heart. I truly admired her and still miss her, too.
Her Majesty, The Queen,
Buckingham Palace,
London, SW1A 1AA.
Your Majesty,
It is with great honour and pride that my neighbours and I celebrated your Platinum Jubilee with a street party on 4 June 2022. I have enclosed a signed copy of the invitation sent out to all the neighbours, a serviette and paper plate on which the finest of cakes was eaten and some photographs taken on the day. We hope that these tokens of the party will remind you of the pride we take in Your Majesty and the honour it bestows upon you.
Furthermore, having been born in the United States of America, I personally would like to thank you for accepting me into your fine country as a naturalised citizen. In 1985, I married one of your faithful subjects, a true British man from Hertfordshire, whom I met while working in Madrid, Spain. We moved to England in 1995 and I, soon thereafter, fell in love with this wonderful country of yours. I chose to become a citizen of the United Kingdom and pledged my allegiance to Your Majesty.
In all the years I have lived here, you have never ceased to amaze me. Firstly, you have shown me what it takes to be a woman in charge - the power, dignity, sacrifice, stamina, perseverance, intelligence, savvy and grit. Secondly, as a mother, you continue to love, nurture, forgive and hold close, those of your family that are, well, human, like the rest of us! Lastly, as a fellow Christian, your faith in the Lord spurs me on to be steadfast in my faith, to pray without ceasing and to love and to serve whatever the cost, knowing that this is what Christ, our Lord, did and continues to do.
Your Majesty, I pray that this letter brings you honour, admiration and joy and that the Lord will continue to bless you all the days of your beautiful and magnificent life.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Dana L. Allen
My grandfather, who came from Europe in the '20s, taught me how the best Americans are Americans by CHOICE, not by birth. While you're not from Great Britain (which is shocking, given your elegant British accent!!), it's clear that, as a Brit by choice, you support the Crown and all that it stands for. That's clear in your wonderfully generous essay. I'm sure somewhere, some how, the Queen is smiling.
